WiMAX (News - Alert) chipmaker Sequans Communications announced that Sumitomo Electric Networks has adopted its Mobile WiMAX semiconductor solutions for the development of an “ultra small CPE” called the SWiM WS2000/2001.

Sumitomo is a supplier of broadband access equipment, and its major product lines include ADSL, VDSL, GE-PON, VoIP, Broadband router and more. With the new device, the company plans to target the home security, machine to machine and automotive markets.

The new device will be used for video applications, remote-controlled cameras, home controllers, and tracking devices for the home market, and in-car navigation, remote diagnostics, and security for the automotive market, company officials said.

Suminet’s SWiM WS2000 is an embedded module, while SWiM WS2001 is a standalone module. Company officials said that they both include an Ethernet PHY and USB 2.0 interface and a complete networking software suite.

Sequans offers the “most advanced and powerful” WiMAX chip solutions available today,” Takashi Suzuki, director at Suminet said, adding that Sequans’ technology has enabled the company to build a “state-of-the art solution with very high performance, providing unique value for our particular applications.”

Recently, Sequans introduced its new generation of 65 nm chips that integrate baseband and triple band RF in a single die. The chips are based on 65 nm technology and delivers high levels of integration.

Sequans said that its technology delivers maximum throughput of greater than 40 Mbps with low power consumption of less than 350 mW in active mode - with fully loaded MIMO traffic -- and less than 0.5 mW in standby.

Plus, the integrated RF covers all three global WiMAX bands - 2.3, 2.5, and 3.5 GHz. In addition, it supports both TDD and H-FDD. All of Sequans’ mobile station solutions support 2 Tx and uplink MIMO, company officials said.

Additionally, Sequans has announced that it has been selected to supply chips to PointRed Telecom, product subsidiary of Gemini Communication, the major winner of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL (News - Alert)) contract award for deployment of WiMAX network equipment in India.
